NERCHE Senior Associates Diana Beaudoin's 25-year career in higher education spans a broad range of institutions -
small liberal arts colleges, large public and private research universities, women's colleges, business specialty colleges, church-affiliated colleges, a community college, and an academic
consortium of five Boston colleges. Diana's research and writing are related to assessing academic programs and student learning outcomes, general education, leadership, performance
assessment of college presidents and boards, university planning and state economic development, teaching cases in higher education leadership and management, values education, and career
education. Cathy Burack
is a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Youth and Communities at the Heller School at Brandeis University. Before going to Brandeis she served as the Associate Director of NERCHE where she
focused on ways faculty and administrators can fulfill the civic missions of their colleges and universities.
Prior to coming to NERCHE, Cathy worked in Student Affairs at the University of Missouri St. Louis where she was the interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and directed the Women's
Center, and in the nonprofit sector where she directed a shelter for battered women.
Arthur Chickering
is a nationally respected writer and teacher of
higher education, now retired from a Distinguished University Professor position at George Mason University. He holds a part-time position at Norwich University in Vermont. He is the
author, with Zelda Gamson, of the widely read "Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education." Zelda Gamson is the founding director of NERCHE and also founded the doctoral program in higher education
administration at UMass Boston. Before becoming a faculty member at UMass Boston, Zee spent more than 20 years at the University of Michigan as Study Director and Faculty Associate at the Institute for Social Research, as Professor at the Center for the Study of Higher Education and as Associate Director and Professor in the Residential College.
Dwight Giles
is Professor of Higher Education Administration in the Graduate College of Education, University of Massachusetts, Boston. He teaches courses in learning and curriculum, institutional change, and supervises dissertations in the Doctoral Program in Higher Education Administration. Prior to coming to U MASS Boston in January 2001, he was Director of Internships and Professor of the Practice of Human and Organizational Development at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. From 1980 to 1992, Dwight was a faculty member and program director in the Field and International Study Program at Cornell University. At both Vanderbilt and Cornell he was active in promoting and developing service-learning and community-university partnerships.
He received his Ph.D. in Community Development from The Pennsylvania State University where he studied
participation in community voluntary associations and natural helping networks. His Master's degree is from Union Theological Seminary where he examined progressive education reform.
Dwight is nationally recognized for his research and practice in service-learning. His other academic interests focus on community development, civic participation,
community university partnerships, participatory action research; and higher education reform, including applications of John Dewey's philosophy. He has co-authored numerous books and
articles on service-learning research including "Where's the Learning in Service-Learning?" with Janet Eyler. With Tim Stanton and Nadinne Cruz, he co-authored "Service-Learning: A
movement's pioneers reflect on its origins, practice, and future". He recently was guest coeditor for the special research issue of the Michigan Journal of Community Service-Learning.
With Janet Eyler, he is currently writing a faculty workbook entitled, "Designing the Learning in Service-Learning". He serves as a national and
international consultant in experiential and service learning for colleges and universities, foundations, and professional societies. He served on the board of the National Society for
Experiential Education and chaired its research committee for five years. He is faculty co-chair of the Service-Learning Advisory Committee at U Mass, Boston, a member of the National Peer
Review Board for the Scholarship of Engagement, and a consultant for the AAHE-Campus Compact National Consulting Corps.Hannah Goldberg is the former Provost and Academic Vice President at Wheaton College and before that served as Academic Dean at Antioch College. She was a member
of the board of the Association of American Colleges and Universities and served as Chair of the American Council of Academic Deans. After serving on numerous accreditation teams, she has also
served as a consultant to the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Bernard Harleston, former Chair of the Department of Leadership in Education at
the Graduate College of Education
at UMass Boston and previously served as President of City College, City University of New York. Bernie serves as a consultant to the Ford Foundation on a variety of projects, including issues of higher education transformation in South Africa.
Deborah Hirsch, former Director of NERCHE, is currently the Executive Director of the Boston Higher Education Partnership, a cooperative effort on the part of colleges and
universities in the Boston area to support the academic achievement of the young people of the city of Boston. The Partnership is a program of The Education Resources Institute. Larry Ladd leads the higher education consulting practice of
Grant Thornton LLP, focusing on strategic planning, financial planning and management, information technology, outsourcing, and
inter-institutional collaboration. Before joining Grant Thornton, he served as Director of Budget and Financial Planning at Harvard University, Chief Financial Officer at the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution, Dean of Administration and Dean of the College of Special Studies at Tufts University, Assistant Provost of Boston University, and Assistant to the President of Duke
University. He is a former trustee of the University of Massachusetts.Tammy Lenski, founder of Lenski Associates, is a mediator, facilitator and trainer specializing in conflict management in higher education. She holds a faculty appointment in the Mediation/Conflict
Management Program at Woodbury College. Formerly, she was the chief student affairs officer at Trinity College in Vermont. Sherry Penney former Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston and interim president of the University of Massachusetts from June 1995 until January
1996. She currently holds an endowed chair in leadership and is developing a Center for Collaborative Leadership
at UMass Boston. At NERCHE she is working on a specialized think tank for research and discussion for senior academics. |
