Effective August 1, 2007, Dr. Carol L. Colbeck will serve as dean of the Graduate College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Colbeck earned her BA in English, her AM in Sociology, and her PhD in Administration and Policy Analysis/Higher Education from Stanford University. She is an active researcher, with a particular interest in understanding how social and organizational contexts shape academic work. She has received research funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Dr. Colbeck is an associate professor in the College of Education at The Pennsylvania State University, and is currently serving as director and senior research associate of the university’s Center for the Study of Higher Education. Dr. Colbeck led a collaborative plan to reorganize the center to increase its voice and influence in education policy discussions. She has an impressive history of engagement with educational issues, teachers, and learners at all levels, as reflected in her extensive publication record.
As dean of the Graduate College of Education, Dr. Colbeck will help to articulate an expanded vision for the college. In collaboration with faculty and others, she will promote excellent
teaching, enrich the college’s academic programs in order to prepare diverse, competent, caring, and responsive professionals; strengthen links between the college and local school districts; and collaborate with networks of teachers, educational administrators, and public and private agencies.

This hands-on position is responsible for overall financial operations of NEC including accounting, budgeting, investments and banking relations, tax and regulatory filings, employee benefits, year-end audit and financial information systems. The CFO will also have an important role in strategic planning and the creation of long-range financial modeling as part of this process. The CFO is a member of the senior leadership staff, including the President, Dean of the College, Dean of the Schools of Preparatory and Continuing Education, Head of Operations and Institutional Planning, Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Dean of Students and Director of the Preparatory School. The CFO is expected to be actively involved in the Finance, Audit and Investment Committees of the Board of Trustees and to take a leadership role with the President in the business development of NEC.
