A partnership between UMPI, a small public university in northern Maine, and the two Native American groups in the region, the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, is developing a sustainable plan to increase academic and professional success for Native American students through investigation of the historical barriers to success, frank dialogue, and a respect for cultural exchange. We are working collaboratively to identify the already known, as well as, yet undiscovered barriers responsible for low retention and graduation rates in this underserved population.
