UMass Boston is focusing on students who enter through Directions for Student Potential (DSP). DSP students are largely low income, first generation, students of color who receive intensive academic and transitional support which contribute to a significantly higher one year retention rate. This initial success is not sustained, with DSP students having graduation rates on par with other freshmen. A critical analysis of the DSP cohort and identification of strategies that improve their persistence to graduation will shed important light on how to more effectively retain and graduate minority, low-income, and first generation and other students at UMass Boston.
