The goal of the Pressure Points
campaign is to inspire a debate about higher education’s public
purposes. By raising awareness of the issues that higher education
has not effectively addressed – and making sure that a broad coalition
of interested parties participate in the discussion – we hope
to create the concerted pressure that will lead to constructive change.
Which groups comprise this “broad coalition”?
They include:
 |
Policymakers such as governors, legislators,
state boards of higher education, and their respective policy
aides, staff,
and executive officer |
 |
Regents/trustees of public and private institutions |
 |
High school students, parents,
and guidance counselors |
 |
Current university and college students and
faculty |
 |
Academic presidents, chancellors, provosts,
and other administrators |
 |
Media, business and civic leaders, and foundations |
It is not necessary that all these parties take
action, or become heavily involved. The important thing
is that the discussion be initiated and
a plurality of voices be involved. In fact, each group will have different
questions to ask, different needs to be addressed. We have compiled
sample questions that
interested parties should ask, as appropriate to them, within the three policy
areas on which the Pressure Points campaign focuses.
