Working Paper No. 2
Assessing Faculty Shortages in Comprehensive Colleges and Universities

Zelda F. Gamson, Dorothy E. Finnegan and Ted I.K. Youn

Abstract

The paper explores the likelihood of faculty shortages in comprehensive universities using data generated from national surveys. Noting the uniqueness of the comprehensive  university, particularly in serving undergraduate education, the authors examine statistics concerning faculty demographics and projected enrollments and predict periods in which faculty hiring at this type of  institution will be most likely. Results from a detailed field study in five disciplines across a number of institutions in New England indicate diverse patterns of faculty shortages and hiring as well as important  information on strategies for diversifying faculty, innovative methods of recruitment, and creative alternatives for developing institutional conditions which attract and retain new faculty.  (Fall, 1990)
