Dr. David J. Maurrasse is a leading author, speaker, and researcher on the relationship between major institutions and their surrounding communities, focusing on how to utilize institutional resources for societal gain. Currently, Dr. Maurrasse is the President and CEO of Marga Incorporated, a consulting firm that addresses cross-sector partnerships, philanthropy, strategy, and management. Marga works with numerous foundations, including the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the New World Foundation, and the Kellogg Foundation, as well as nonprofits, government agencies, universities, and financial institutions. Since 2000, Dr. Maurrasse has been on the faculty at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. He is currently Associate Research Scholar in the School. At Columbia, he founded the Center for Innovation in Social Responsibility, which researched and promoted dialogue on the formation of partnerships between institutions of higher education and their communities. Before moving to Columbia University, Dr. Maurrasse was a professor at Yale University from 1995-2000. And, from 1998-2000, he was a Senior Program Advisor at the Rockefeller Foundation, where he worked on community building and an initiative to further higher education/community partnerships.
Dr. Maurrasse has published important books in his fields of research. In 2001, he authored the book, Beyond the Campus: How Colleges and Universities form Partnerships with Their Communities, a work about the partnership between institutes of higher education and the surrounding community. In 2004, he edited the book, A Future for Everyone: Innovative Social Responsibility and Community Partnerships, which details responsibility to the community on the part of major institutions and industries. Most recently, in 2005, Dr. Maurrasse authored the book entitled Listening to Harlem: Gentrification, Community and Business, which describes the economic development of the neighborhood.
Due to his leadership and expertise in establishing affirmative change in leading social institutions and philanthropy in general, Dr. Maurrasse has been a member of the board of several organizations, including the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, in which he served as Chair. He is the current Chair of the Alliance for Community Enhancement (ACE) at Columbia University, an actual student-run nonprofit organization that partners with community based organizations in Harlem, funded by the Ford Foundation. Dr. Maurrasse is a founding board member of the Association for Community and Higher Education Partnerships (ACHEP). Most recently, he was named to the Board of Trustees at Bucknell University.
Dr. Maurrasse graduated from the University of Michigan, and he received a Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University.
