Effective August 1, 2007, Dr. Carol L. Colbeck will serve as dean of the Graduate College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Colbeck earned her BA in English, her AM in Sociology, and her PhD in Administration and Policy Analysis/Higher Education from Stanford University. She is an active researcher, with a particular interest in understanding how social and organizational contexts shape academic work. She has received research funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Dr. Colbeck is an associate professor in the College of Education at The Pennsylvania State University, and is currently serving as director and senior research associate of the university’s Center for the Study of Higher Education. Dr. Colbeck led a collaborative plan to reorganize the center to increase its voice and influence in education policy discussions. She has an impressive history of engagement with educational issues, teachers, and learners at all levels, as reflected in her extensive publication record.
As dean of the Graduate College of Education, Dr. Colbeck will help to articulate an expanded vision for the college. In collaboration with faculty and others, she will promote excellent
teaching, enrich the college’s academic programs in order to prepare diverse, competent, caring, and responsive professionals; strengthen links between the college and local school districts; and collaborate with networks of teachers, educational administrators, and public and private agencies.

A half-day conference cosponsored by the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy, the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, the Rappaport Institute, and others. How can the state's cities and towns — particularly less affluent communities outside of the Boston urban core—build effective partnerships with the colleges, universities, and hospitals that often are the "anchor institution" in their host community?
The Association of American Colleges and Universities will host a conference on February 21-23 on Integrative Designs for General Education and Assessment in Boston. The conference will will focus on ways that faculty, academic administrators, and student affairs educators can shape higher education’s response to calls for increased accountability while, at the same time, reinvigorating general education. Massachusetts Campus Compact and NERCHE co-sponsor Achieving Recognition for Community Engagement: A Workshop for New England Higher Education Institutions on Applying for the Carnegie Foundation Classification on Community Engagement. The Downtown Education Collaborative (DEC) seeks an experienced, creative, dynamic leader to coordinate a unique initiative: the launch of a storefront center dedicated to joint, community-based educational work in and with Lewiston’s downtown residential neighborhood. DEC is a community education partnership that includes four local colleges (Andover College, Bates College, Central Maine Community College, and the University of Southern Maine, Lewiston-Auburn), Lewiston Adult Education, the Lewiston Public Library, and Empower Lewiston. Funded by a grant to Bates College, DEC is leasing a storefront education center this fall and seeks a full-time Center Director to oversee its programs.
The Center Director will report to the Downtown Education Collaborative with immediate supervision by the Director of the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates College.
